VeriFactu: an unavoidable change for self-employed professionals and SMEs from 2026
With less than two months until VeriFactu comes into force, nearly half of business owners and self-employed professionals are still unaware of the requirements of this new electronic invoicing system promoted by the Spanish Tax Agency. According to a Legálitas study, 47.3% do not know what it is or when it will become mandatory, and only 27.4% have begun the transition process (revistapymes.es).
The system will require invoicing software to meet strict technical requirements that ensure data integrity, traceability and transparency, allowing the public administration to verify invoices in real time.
Under the regulations, the requirement will apply to companies and corporations from 1 January 2026, and to self-employed professionals from 1 July 2026. Penalties for failing to comply may reach €50,000 per tax year and, for anyone who develops or distributes non-compliant software, up to €150,000.
The risk is not only financial. Being unprepared may lead to invoices being rejected by major customers, delayed payments, technical incompatibilities or damage to trust and reputation.
The message is clear: do not wait until the last moment. Adapting invoicing systems is not only a legal obligation but also an opportunity to modernise processes, improve security and increase operational efficiency for the future.
